Unit 2 was established on August 1, 1962. During the years its structure has changed, the number of provided services increased and their quality improved.
The unit deals with female patients from Pašilaičiai and Fabijoniškės sectors in Vilnius city, Vilnius rural district, Varėna town and district, the town of Druskininkai. Socially insured patients are eligible for free hospital treatment. Additional procedures and other complex clinical-diagnostic tests are performed in the unit on patient’s request.
Treatment team or medical staff takes care of each patient’s health in the unit. The team consists of psychiatrist, psychologist, nurse, social worker, occupational therapist and psychotherapist. Each patient has individual testing and treatments plan, which exactly corresponds to the patients underlying disease, needs and opportunities. The unit is used to treat patients with a variety of mental disorders: neurotic, stress, somatic, mood, personality and behavioral disorders, also with addictions to psychoactive substances and other chronic mental illnesses.
The provided treatment is complex, i.e. including medications, psychotherapy and psychosocial rehabilitation. In recent years many new medications have been discovered, which helps to treat patients safely and effectively. New antipsychotic drugs, also known as atypical antipsychotics, have unique qualities and are quite different from the traditional medications used previously: They have almost no side effects and are particularly well accepted. All new antipsychotic drugs are widely used in the unit for treatment, such as: risperidone, olanzapine, clozapine, amisulpride, ziprasidone. A significant number of patients, in the unit suffer from depression. These patients are also treated with the newest antidepressants: escitalopram, citalopram, fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine, venlafaxine, mirtazapine and other drugs of new generation. For the treatment of some other disorders electrical convulsive therapy, reflexology, massage and other procedures are applied quite frequently. If necessary, the state of patients is promptly assessed by doctors of other specialties: surgeon, therapist, neurologist, dermatovenerologist, gynecologist, optician and others; and their recommendations are also applied. There is a wide use of psychotherapy and psychosocial rehabilitation, occupational and art therapy in the unit. Social worker helps patients to deal with their social and domestic problems. Of significant importance for patients’ quicker recovery methods related to the rehabilitation of patients’ working and adaptive skills, for what occupational and art studio was founded, where patients under the direction of occupational therapist can learn to do small household chores, draw, read. Also, patients can participate in hospital’s club activities, together with occupational therapist visit museums, exhibitions and go on tours, attend concerts and other cultural events at the hospital.
All doctors of the unit are actively involved in academic work and constantly improve their skills, get acquainted with psychiatric innovations and apply them in practice. Same as throughout the hospital, the unit strictly complies with confidentiality and other medical ethical principles.
